Job Profile Summary

Responsible for leading and delivering mechanical engineering support across Europe & South Africa (ESA) terminals, ensuring safe, reliable and compliant operation of assets in line with bp’s OMS requirements. The role develops engineering capability across the region while driving mechanical integrity, risk management and continuous improvement.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage the ESA Mechanical Engineering team, providing direction, coaching and technical guidance to ensure high-quality engineering support, working closely across the regional teams, sharing takeaways and best practices

  • Build strong relations across ESA teams and possess a strong continuous improvement mindset

  • Deliver mechanical engineering input to support safe, reliable and compliant operations, aligned with bp HSSE expectations and OMS requirements

  • Act as the focal point for mechanical integrity and engineering risk management, including leading engineering barrier reviews and supporting risk register inputs

  • Oversee the allocation, prioritisation and assurance of engineering work, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery across ESA terminals

  • Equipment Class Owner for ESA, responsible for discipline oversight of assigned Equipment Class(es) across the Site/Region and for managing discipline barrier health

  • Incorporates local learnings, Global Equipment Strategies, and Reliability insights into Local Strategies

  • Serve as the primary focal point for Equipment Class insights within the site/region

  • Ensures conformance to discipline-specific OMS sub-elements

  • Provide governance and oversight of engineering deliverables, including contractor outputs, ensuring conformance with bp standards and practices, in support of MoCs, operations and site projects

  • Support and contribute to the development and update of key engineering processes and documents (e.g. engineering practices and standards)

  • Ensure effective performance of Asset Engineers by providing guidance, prioritisation and technical support across the discipline

  • Work closely with Terminal Managers and Asset Teams to ensure engineering activities deliver value to site operations

  • Support major programmes across ESA (e.g. mechanical integrity improvement initiatives, OMS 5.4 delivery, inspection and maintenance improvements)

  • Develop capability within the team, including early careers, ensuring engineers are competent and supported to succeed

  • Barrier Owner responsible for P2 Structural Integrity, P4 Mechanical Integrity, P5 Relief Systems, P9 Collision prevention and breakaway systems, M1 Secondary Containment, M2 Passive Fire Protection for ESA terminals

  • Verify design, testing, and functional requirements during the engineering phases

  • Monitor barrier performance and provide insights through OMS Self‑Verification, KPIs, incidents, and assurance findings

  • Proactively identify and communicate performance gaps, and recommend appropriate actions to your Risk Owner

  • Support the VP and SVP Risk Review processes when required
     

Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated leadership capability, with experience managing or influencing distributed engineering teams

  • Strong mechanical engineering background, ideally within terminals, pipelines or process facilities, particularly with extensive knowledge of Tanks, Pumps, Pipelines, Valves and Marine Facilities (jetties and loading arms)

  • Experience in mechanical integrity, inspection, maintenance or asset engineering

  • Working knowledge of government and industry standards and practices

  • Strong understanding of risk management, engineering governance and assurance processes

  • Proven ability to influence across organisational and geographical boundaries

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Experience in driving continuous improvement and performance management

  • Familiarity with OMS principles and application in an operational environment
