Job Description

Overview

AtkinsRéalis’ Engineering and Design Practice is seeking a motivated Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join its Manchester-based team. This role offers the opportunity to work within a nationally connected delivery team, collaborating with professionals across the UK and globally through the Global Technology Centre.

You will contribute to delivering high-quality engineering design solutions across a diverse range of sectors, including Commercial, Defence, Energy, Education, and Healthcare. The role provides exposure to high-profile projects such as Manchester Digital Campus, Canary Wharf, and major infrastructure and defence programmes, offering valuable experience in complex, multidisciplinary environments.

The position combines technical design responsibilities with client interaction, providing an excellent platform to develop both engineering expertise and stakeholder management skills. With a strong focus on sustainability, digital innovation, and career development, this role will enable you to enhance your technical, project management, and digital capabilities within a supportive, forward-thinking environment that values growth and continuous learning.

Your Role

  • Design and specify mechanical building services systems from concept through to detailed design, including HVAC and public health systems.
  • Perform detailed engineering calculations using industry-standard tools such as Hevacomp, MEPworx, and IES, supporting team outputs where required.
  • Develop and review technical specifications, reports, and presentations, ensuring alignment with best practices and project requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and BIM teams to coordinate models, drawings, and overall design deliverables.
  • Engage with clients and key stakeholders, representing the organisation in meetings and technical discussions.
  • Conduct site surveys, inspections, and oversee installation and commissioning activities to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Manage individual workload effectively, contributing to the successful delivery of projects within timelines and budgets.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members, supporting their professional development.

About You

  • Proven experience in mechanical building services engineering with a strong track record of delivering high-quality design solutions.
  • Ability to work independently, taking ownership of technical delivery and solving complex engineering challenges across project stages.
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Progressing towards, or holding, Chartered membership (CIBSE, IMechE, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in industry-standard tools such as IES, Hevacomp, Revit, NBS, and Microsoft Office; experience in thermal modelling is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of UK technical standards and codes, with the ability to apply sound engineering judgement and communicate effectively.
  • Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and engaging with clients, with the ability to mentor junior engineers.
  • Understanding of energy efficiency, decarbonisation strategies, and performance evaluation, including commissioning and post-installation assessment.
