We are looking to employ a full-time Senior Sustainability Manager within our Responsible Business team to fulfil an on-site Construction Environmental Manager role for a UK Government Department project based in Surrey. This position is ideal for an individual experienced in sustainable construction, with a strong holistic understanding and knowledge of sustainability, net zero, nature and social value. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the project’s Construction Environmental Management Plan and associated environmental commitments, including maintaining key plans, managing subcontractors and consultants, liaising with statutory bodies, securing consents, and delivering training, briefings, and communications to promote best practice across the project.
You’ll be responsible for:
• Delivering service excellence, purpose-led and measurable sustainability outcomes for the client.
• Developing strong working relationships with the client and our internal project team.
• Supporting business development and work-winning activities through bids, case studies and raising Mace’s profile externally.
• Ensure compliance with the site’s Construction Environmental Management Plan, including commitments from the Environmental Statement, procedures and relevant legislation.
• Develop and maintain the CEMP and associated plans (as applicable), including the Site Waste Management Plan, Noise and Vibration Management Plan, Flood Response Plan and Emergency Response Plan.
• Brief supervisors on the content of relevant plans and the need for compliance.
• Manage specialist environmental sub-contractors, consultants and service providers.
• Liaise with statutory bodies regarding consents, permits and licences, in line with the programme and statutory application periods.
• Complete and submit statutory consent applications and brief staff on compliance requirements.
• Prepare for and undertake environmental audits.
• Provide environmental induction training and regular toolbox talks for all personnel and sub-contractors.
• Promote and communicate environmental issues and best practice; ensure project staff understand their responsibilities under the CEMP, environmental procedures, plans and method statements.
• Undertake environmental risk assessments.
• Provide a weekly compliance review against the CEMP.
• Coordinate a formal CEMP review every six months to identify whether significant changes are required; ensure the Project Manager maintains an update record. Minor updates should be captured through updated RAMS and site-specific reports, as appropriate.
• Undertake inspections in response to incidents, breaches of the CEMP or third-party complaints, and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Liaise with the Project Manager to manage provision of environmental training for the Contractor(s).
You’ll ideally need to have:
• At least 7 years’ experience in sustainability consultancy with a relevant degree
• Practical construction experience
• Proven track record in implementing and embedding sustainability into major projects
• Strong technical knowledge of sustainability topics including net zero carbon, biodiversity/nature-based solutions and social value
• Passion and drive to maximise sustainability in the built environment
• Business development experience including bid writing, client interviews and presentations
• Skills in project management including effective problem solving and negotiation
• Ability to persuade and influence stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
• Be self-motivated and able to self-manage
• Calm and professional manner
• Solid administration and IT skills – Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
